Gospel Reflection
Saturday after Ash Midweek Luke 5:27-32

T he question of the Pharisees and their scribes to Jesus reveals what they thought of taxation collectors, 'Why do you lot eat and beverage with tax collectors and sinners?' 'Sinners' were those who were perceived as regularly breaking God's Law, and taxation collectors were presumed to be among this group. From the perspective of those who thought of themselves as religious at the time, Jesus was keeping strange visitor. He was living on the religious margins, and he was calling people from these margins, such as Levi, to belong to the group he was gathering around him to share in his piece of work in a special way. Jesus responded to his critics past declaring that his primary concern was to heal the sick, the spiritually sick besides as the physically ill, and to call sinners back home to God.

A few capacity later in Luke'south Gospel, the same criticism would exist levied against Jesus by the Pharisees and the scribes, this time in the course of a statement rather than a question. 'This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.' On that occasion, Jesus responded to the criticism past telling the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost sons. The younger son had sinned spectacularly against heaven and earlier his father, yet, the male parent never lost hope that he would come up back home and he scanned the horizon for his return, seeing him 'while he was still far off'. Jesus was very aware of those who were 'far off', on the spiritual edge. He had a special want to seek them out and assure them that God continued to dear them. We can all find ourselves far off from God from time to fourth dimension, having gone our own way. Today'due south gospel reading assures united states of america that, even when we are far off, we are never far from the Lord's eye. He is always calling usa home. Indeed, he does more than; he invites himself to our table in the hope that we will accept his self-invitation.
